Tourism is helping the Ik community thrive and preserve their way of life, similar to the Batwa people in southwestern Uganda. As you explore the village, feel free to ask about their communal child-rearing practices, polygamous family structures, and the lack of formal education.
Reaching the Ik village is challenging but made easier by a marked trail. It takes several hours by vehicle to reach the starting point, and the hike involves steep climbs. The peak of Mount Morungole is 2,749 meters high, so good physical fitness is essential for this 8-kilometer (16-kilometer round trip) trek.

HOW TO GET TO KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, UGANDA
Getting to Kidepo Valley National Park can be an adventure in itself due to its remote location. Here are the main options for reaching the park:
- By Road
From Kampala: The journey by road from Kampala to Kidepo Valley National Park takes about 10 to 12 hours. You drive following the route through Gulu and Kitgum. The roads can be rough, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended.
From Jinja or Entebbe: Similar to the route from Kampala, you’ll need to drive through Gulu. The total travel time will also be around 10 to 12 hours.
From Kitgum: If you’re starting from Kitgum, the park is approximately 2 to 3 hours away by road. This is one of the easier routes and is well-marked.
- By Air
Domestic Flights: Several airlines offer flights from Entebbe International Airport to Kidepo Valley National Park. The flight takes about 1.5 hours, and you can land at Kidepo Airstrip. From there, you can arrange for a vehicle to take you to the park entrance.
