The Ik are a small group of about 10,000 to 11,000 people who migrated from Ethiopia and settled in this region. Upon reaching their villages, you’ll be greeted with traditional dances. Tourism is helping the Ik community thrive and preserve their way of life, similar to the Batwa people in southwestern Uganda. As you explore the village, feel free to ask about their communal child-rearing practices, polygamous family structures, and the lack of formal education.
Reaching the Ik village is challenging but made easier by a marked trail. It takes several hours by vehicle to reach the starting point, and the hike involves steep climbs. The peak of Mount Morungole is 2,749 meters high, so good physical fitness is essential for this 8-kilometer (16-kilometer round trip) trek..
